Gosset Grande Reserve Brut champagne N.V

Gosset

Most people have "Their" champagne for those special times and Gosset is ours, engagement, new house, new kitchen, the arrival of our first child. So we decided to break the Secret Cellar mould and stock this amazing drink as its personal to us and Gosset is one of the Oldest Champagne houses.

Over the years we have drunk our fair share of Gosset's range and enjoyed every sip. We love the velvety style to the smaller bubbles which give a very creamy, dry but not acidic flavour, this comes from the fact that all of Gosset cuvees have good bottle age.

A bit about Champagne Gosset:

Gosset, founded in 1584, is one of the oldest and most venerable champagne houses. The family Cointreau owns this champagne house which is located in the village of Aÿ. The house built its reputation on vinous, generous and powerful cuvees. The malolactic fermentation is carefully avoided to preserve the natural fruity aroma of the wines. The champagnes have remained well-defined and perfectly regular over the years. The cuvees are still presented in antique bottles, exact reproductions of the ones used in the 18th century.

Production area

Situated in the tiny Grand Cru village of Aÿ, 5 kilometres north of Epernay, Gosset has some rather famous neighbours, including Bollinger. However, production is much below that of the larger houses and would struggle to reach the number of bottles produced by Krug in a year. Yearly production has now reached almost 1.3 million bottles. All Gosset champagnes are ‘recently disgorged’ and the house does not undertake malolactic fermentation. This preserves acidity which in turn keeps the wine fresh for much longer. Bottles are removed from one part of the cellar to another every six months and given a vigorous shake in the process. This reinvigorates any live yeast and is only carried out by a few houses.

Expert Reviews:

Jancis Robinson - 17/20 - Non Vintage
Beautifully balanced blend based on 2005. I preferred it to Gosset's current vintage champagne. Very nervy and muscular. Not too sweet, not too tart. Jancis Robinson

Wine Advocate/Robert Parker - 91 pts  - Non Vintage

Nov 2011 - The NV Brut Grande Reserve opens with a bouquet of chalk, slate and wet stones. It is a beautifully pointed, energetic wine endowed with a gorgeous drive from start to finish. Red berries, dried flowers and mint are some of the nuances that inform the finish.

James Suckling - 92 pts  - Non Vintage

July 2015 - A fragrant nose with plenty of bright red florals on offer. Rose-like, musky and perfumed, this has a wealth of freshness and very subtle biscuit-like complexity. The palate's assertive and fully formed, really expands as it moves, delivering bright red berry and ripe peach and nectarine flavors. There's a little spicy twist through the finish. An expressive style made to drink now.
